How can you reconcile these??

Someone who avoids what's going on in the world as a matter of policy is a jackass. Jackasses might feel better than I do, but I have the comfort of knowing that at least I'm not a jackass.

I'm a relentless optimist, by the way. But people who think it's OK to shove their heads in the sand piss me off.

That's your opinion and your certainly entitled to it. If you don't like the points disregard them them, I'm not an evangelist trying to convert the world to my way of thinking. It's not a case of justification or reconciliation, it's more a take it or leave it scenario.
